“Come si è avvicinata al New Age?”

Mi attirava la comunità, il senso di comunità. Ricordate il proverbio "li conoscerete i cristiani per come si amano fra loro? Sono cresciuta nella mia famiglia come cattolica di nome ma non come praticante. Credevi di essere cattolico in quanto la gente ci chiamava cattolici irlandesi, non significava di essere cristiano praticante.

Ho visto che si volevano bene nella comunità New Age, in pace, il che è facile quando segui la tenebra, che è priva di Gesù. Non hanno tante tentazioni o tormenti perché già nel campo del diavolo. Non sono nella lotta spirituale in quanto si sono già venduti.

“Cosa cercava nel New Age e nelle sue pratiche?”

Volevo potere, sul mio ambiente e me stessa. Potere sulle persone nella mia vita, il potere che ti dà il New Age, potere demoniaco, che è forte.
Guardiamo Adamo ed Eva: Eva prende il frutto proibito credendo satana che le dice "Avrai poteri come Dio" e così nel New Age quando partecipi ai seminari medianici e fai pratica con i maestri ottieni poteri ed essere onnisciente. Ma questo non ci fa come Dio assolutamente.
Quindi ho ottenuto poteri credendo che avessi comandi soprannaturali sul mio mondo. Poi mi sono resa conto che era un falso, tutto fasullo.

“Cosa l'ha portata ad allontanarsene?”

Cercavo la Madonna, in verità lessi un articolo scritto da una donna leader nel New Age che pensava che la Madonna fosse una dea. Pensai: Cosa? Una dea come i romani o greci? No, questo non è possibile! La Madonna è vera, abitava in Israele, era ebrea, mise alla luce il Bambino Gesù. Camminava su questa Terra a piedi nudi, divenne incinta e portò Bambino Gesù in grembo. Aveva genitori, quali Gioacchino ed Anna. Era umana in poche parole. Non era una dea dell'Egitto, Grecia o di Roma. Siccome sapevo questo nella mia mente respingevo questo racconto.

Non stimavo più i new ager e pensai: "C'è qualcosa che non va con questa gente. Questi si sono proprio persi. So che Maria non è una dea." Poi a quel punto ho pensato: "E il resto? Chissà quant'altro non è vero. Che altre bugie ci sono?" Da quel punto mi diede la grazia di aprire i miei occhi e mi fece capire che cercavo lei. Non cercavo la Chiesa cattolica e nemmeno Gesù, volevo solo Maria. Volevo la mia Madre, cercavo la mia Madre. Non mi rendevo conto che ti porta al Suo Figlio e alla Chiesa. Non pensavo a tutto ciò, cercavo solo Maria.

“Come valuta ora le pratiche New Age?”

Sono diventate più diffuse. Negli anni '90 quando sono uscita le pratiche Reiki, Bio-Energy, etc erano sconosciute. Non si trovavano presso i centri di ritiri spirituali o hospice oppure ospedali, e gli insegnati erano sciamani, maestri Reiki, costosi e non per tutti. Questa era la situazione negli anni '80 quando ero maestra guaritrice io; oggi anche gli infermieri studiano queste cose per offrirle in ospedale!
Tutte sono pratiche occulte. Parlano di energie, però da chi? Da che dio? Padre Figlio e Spirito Santo, o almeno Spirito Santo? Dono carismatico? No, loro parlano di energia di guarigione ma quale "energia" e da dove, e di chi? Ne parlo nel mio libro; l'energia della pratica viene da uno spirito, quale spirito? Un angelo caduto, uno spirito diabolico.
Questo è il pericolo ed è molto diffuso oggi.

“Perché ha deciso di scrivere un libro sulla sua esperienza?”

Beh, di fatti la decisone fu presa da altri. Bella questa cosa. Quando sono tornata a fare parte della Chiesa fui invitata a partecipare e pregare presso un convento di Madre Teresa, poi spiegavo alle suore le mie vicende. Mi dissero: "Scrivi a Madre Teresa" (era ancora viva in quei tempi). Feci un paio di lettere ed una era la storia della mia vita, e qui inizia il libro. Mi rispose e mi sembrò una cosa bellissima. Da questa lettera vengo intervistata da un giornale locale della diocesi, poi sono andata a finire sulla radio. Da questo vado a finire in un libro intitolato Figlie prodighe (Prodigal Daughters). Da questo una professoressa in California mi telefonò per chiedermi se lei ed il marito potessero scrivere un libro intero della mia vita in quanto ci hai mossi alla conversione. Il marito new ager che era protestante si convertì solo dal capitolo mio nel libro Figlie prodighe e si mise nei corsi cattolici RCIA. La moglie colombiana è tornata alla Chiesa cattolica. Loro due mi diedero coraggio per scrivere Ransomed From Darkness (Riscattata dalle tenebre) È nato così, ed ora disponibile in sei lingue, compreso l'italiano e ci fa piacere.
In polacco esce l'estate prossima, prima della GMG del Vaticano [poi annualmente c'è il festival MLADIFEST a Medjugorje]. Sono tanti anni che c'è in spagnolo, ed in croato (Medjugorje, Zagreb ed altre città). Poi francese ed inglese.

“Cosa direbbe a chi pratica il New Age?”

Come prima cosa faccio come Madre Teresa: gli dono una Medaglia miracolosa [della Madonna] benedetta. Poi anche come Madre Teresa, un foglietto con la Madonna, visto che già ne parlano come dea. Meglio così, invece di entrare in polemica. Ai new ager piace la figura su carta simile alla medaglia. Gli dico pregatela e che è la Regina del Paradiso e la tua Madre. Così piace a loro poi come mi sto allontanando prego alla Madonna: "Sono anche i tuoi figli. Portali al tuo Figlio Gesù. Faccio sapere che esiste, che è la loro Madre e che li vuole bene." Affidandogli così lascio fare a Lei.

Madre Teresa dava la Medaglia Miracolosa a tutti, compreso quelli a caccia dei guru. Dava la medaglia benedetta poi poneva la domanda: Non vi basta Gesù? Perché pretendere di trovare qualche essere umano in India? Io le davo ed i new ager erano sempre contenti a riceverla, anche indossarla al collo. Visto che quasi tutti (che incontro io) sono battezzati già hanno il segno dello Spirito Santo e quindi è un rinnovo delle promesse battesimali. Maria può guidarli al posto giusto per fare questo.

For starters we would like to know what attracted you to New Age?

What attracted me to New Age was really community. You know the saying: You'll know they are Christians by their love for one another? Because I was raised in a cultural Catholic family which did not practice as Christians, just cultural Catholics, you know it's in name only. You thought you were Catholic because people said you were Irish Catholic, it doesn't mean you are a practicing Christian.

Well what I saw in the New Age community was that the people really liked each other and got along peacefully. Well of course, why wouldn't they? They are already following the dark side, the side that doesn't have Jesus. They are following the other side, they are won over by satan. They are not in spiritual warfare, they are sold out.

What were you seeking? What did you want out of New Age?
I wanted to have power over my environment, myself and people in my life. New Age offers lots of power, the counterfeit gifts; demonic spirit not Holy Spirit. What did satan tell her? If you eat this fruit you'll have all knowledge, you'll be like God. In New Age you take psychic workshops and work with people in the world of spiritualism you'll get power too. You'll start becoming all-knowing too, but is that the same as being like God? Absolutely not. I got power thinking that I had power over the world, my world and realizing it was all counterfeit, all a sham.

What got you away from New Age?
What got me away from New Age was Blessed Mother. I was looking for Our Lady. Quite honestly I read a story on her and she said (the lady who wrote the story was one of the top New Agers in the world) that Our Lady was a goddess. I thought "What? a goddess like the romans and greeks? I thought: "That can't possibly be. Our Lady is not a goddess, She's real. She lived in Israel, She was jewish, She had Baby Jesus, She walked this Earth barefoot and had a beautiful baby named Jesus. She was born of human beings; Anne and Joachim, Jewish heritage…a human being in other words." She wasn't some Egyptian, Greek or Roman goddess. Because I knew this in my mind I rejected the stories that the New Agers were telling me.

I kent thinking: "There is something wrong with these people, even my teachers." I didn't accept what they were teaching and then I stopped and said: "What else isn't true?" At that point She gave me the grace of having my eyes opened and seeing that I was desiring Her. I wasn't looking for the Catholic Church or Jesus, I just wanted Mary. I wanted my mother. I didn't realize that She is going to lead you back to Her Son and the Church. I didn't think like that, I was just looking for Mary.

What do you think of New Age nowadays?
They have gotten more widespread. For example when I came out of New Age in the 1990s Reiki (also Energy and Bio Energy in Europe), these practices weren't known to the common person. Reiki Masters were expensive and you didn't fine the practice in hospitals or retreat centers. It was expensive to be certified in these things. I was certified in the 80s. Today it's amazing how you meet nurses to offer it in hospitals, Catholic hospitals.
They all come from occult practices. You have to look at these practices and look at what's the energy behind them, who is the god behind them? Is it God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit operating out of the Holy Spirit, a charismatic gift? No they call it Energy Healing. That's the overall umbrella category for all these practices. They call it Energy Healing, well who's energy, what energy? Where did the energy come from? I talk about it in my books. The energy for the practice comes from a spirit, what spirit? A fallen angel, a demonic spirit. That's the danger and it seems very prevalent in our culture today.

Why did you decide to write a book on your experiences?
Actually I didn't make the decision, it was made for me. Kind of fun; when I first came into the Church I was invited to Madre Teresa's Convent to go to prayer all the time. I would explain the the nuns what had happened to me. They said "Write her a letter" (Mother was still alive at that time). I sent her a couple of letters and one was pretty much the story of my life and the beginning of the book Ransomed from Darkness, and she sent a letter to me, and I thought that was really beautiful. From that letter there was a lady who interviewed me for the local diocesan letter. From that interview I ended up on the radio. From the radio I ended up in a book called Prodigal Daughters (I'm one of the daughters). From that story a university professor in California invited me to read that story. From that the prof and her husband called my and asked if they could write a whole book as your life has given us the grace of conversion. Her husband said he was a fallen away Protestant and involved in New Age his whole adult life, but was converted by one chapter of the book Prodigal Daughters and was in RCIA. She was a fallen away Catholic that returned. They gave me courage to write Ransomed from Darkness and that's how it all happened.

It's available in six languages including Italian and we're very happy. In Polish it will be ready for the 2016 World Youth Day. It's been in Spanish for many years now. Many years in Croatian (available at Medjugorje, Zagreb and other cities). Then French and English.

What do you say when you meet a New Ager nowadays? First I do what Mother Teresa did: I give them a Miraculous Medal, a blessed one. They get a holy card with it, why not. New Agers who don't know Mary are interested in her, they teach her as a goddess. They love that image of the Miraculous Medal with outstretched hands, instead of arguing with them. Pray to her, as she is the Queen of Heaven and your Mother. Silently and quietly as I'm leaving I say: "Blessed Mother they are your children too. Bring them to your son Jesus." Let them know that she exists, that she is their Mother, and that she loves them. Let her do the job.

Mother Teresa would give them out, blessed to everyone including New Agers looking for a guru and she would say: "Isn't Jesus enough? Why look for human beings in India?
I met many New Agers who would wear it on their neck. Many will be led back as they are baptized Christians. They have been given the mark of the Holy Spirit foam Baptism so it's a matter of renewing their vows. Mary can get them to a place where they are open to do that.
